FOZ DO ARELHO

“Sensibilidades” or "Sensitivities" was the name of a recent exhibition by the Galeria Adamastor in Foz Do Arelho. Artists from the virtual online 'Galeria DaVinci' gave the walls of the restaurant-gallery a new life and included the photographs of the creator of the exhibition, Rui Anastácio, an IT technician. The exhibition had 30 works including photographs, oils, acrylics and mixed mediums, one from each artist. Along with the painter Kim Molinero, who is one of the collaborators of the Galeria Davinci and has his own gallery in Caldas Da Rainha, Rui Anastácio explained that, along with artists from the north to the south of Portugal, the gallery also shows artists from Brazil and Spain.

"The online gallery is a great concept and allows the artists to demostrate their works in a less costly way and give the public access to many artists works." www.davincigallery.net

OBIDOS EVENTS

August 2007.....

"La Traviata” the celebrated opera by Verdi was performed by a cast of 50 in the auditorium of Obidos Castle in August 2007. The unusually chilly August breeze saw a number of unprepared members of the 1500 strong audience leave after the first act, but many people wrapped in blankets and coats thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle. The celebrated soloists Ana Ester Neves and Carlos Guilherme played Violetta and Alfredo Germont. The opera started at 10:15pm and finished at 1:45am but the cold wind did not dampen the enthusiasm of the audience very moved by this fabulous spectacle and of course the surroundings of the castle and Obidos helped to create a very magical evening.

Many thanks to Gazeta Das Caldas for the following photograph.

The medieval market of Obidos took place from the 12th to 22nd July with the theme of the earth and the sky- Man and God dedicated to the superstitions of the middle ages. Around the castle there were animations throughout the ten days of the festival and the organisers surpassed 100,000 spectators and visitors. The ticket cost 4 euros - excellent value for fantastic entertainment tho the locals were complaining at the price increase from last year. To encourage people to get into the spirit of the event (and avoid the queues) you could get in FREE and walk straight in if you were dressed in medieval costume.(remember that for next year...)

I went along just after 7pm on the opening night and it was relatively easy to look at all the stalls selling herbal and spiced dried teas, dried flowers, jewellery, herbal & natural oil toiletries, leather goods, heraldry, toys, wooden sculptures and small pieces of furniture and medieval clothes.

Along with some of the Silvercoast Friends group I watched the minstrels playing fantastic music and one of the wenches dancing and teasing everyone. Plenty of freshly BBQ'd food and cold drinks at good prices and do remember to return your terracotta beaker and plate if you are charged extra for the deposit.

Unfortunately facing a very early start the next day I had to leave around 10ish just as more musicians arrived playing bagpipes (being scottish that certainly stirred my blood!) followed by the medieval courtsfolk dressed in all their splendour. On the way out a huge yellow python was also attracting a lot of attention. (Mental note not to tell Allan if he ever plans a visit as he hates snakes!)

In our opinion this was definitely worth a visit and definitely worth dressing up to avoid the queues especially if you plan on arriving anytime after 10pm just when the evening was getting really interesting.

Definite note for next years diary...

ORGANIC PRODUCE MARKET IN OBIDOS

This weekend market has proved so popular that instead of the advertised times of 9am to 3pm the stall holders have on occasions still been happily selling produce at 6 pm! Conventional produce is also available and customers who attended reported afterwards that the organic fruit and vegetable tasted fantastic. In addition to food produce there are also soaps and other household items for sale. Organic produce is proving popular with many people seeking to avoid pesticides and insecticides and you can now also purchase a wide range of organic fruit and veg in the daily Caldas Market in the Praça da Fruta.

OBIDOS CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL

BATMAN CHOCOLATE MODEL 2007

GET THERE EARLY!!!

In the Christian calendar, Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (beginning of Lent). Also Known as Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) or Pancake Day, it is the last day of Carnival and is the finale of the Carnival season. For many, it is one last chance to indulge before beginning Lent. Traditionally, it is a day to finish all the milk, eggs and butter in the house, hence why many people will eat pancakes on this date.

Shrove Tuesday

The exuberant carnivals of South America were actually started by the Portuguese and the fun still continues to grow from strength to strength today. The streets and squares of Lisbon and other cities buzz with parties and dancing, celebrating the beginning of Lent. During carnival, the Portuguese love to play practical jokes on each other so make sure you have a good sense of humour if you are lucky enough to be in Portugal during this time.

Carnival week

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter and is the anniversary of Jesus' crucifixion and death. Good Friday means "Holy Day" and is celebrated by Christians around the world. Many will visit church or even fast on particular foods on this day.

Good Friday

Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon that occurs on or following the spring equinox. This is why Easter is never on a fixed date. Many families will attend church on this date and it is customary to buy children chocolate Easter Eggs.

Easter Sunday

Freedom Day commemorates the "Revolution of the Carnations" in 1974, when Portugal shook off an oppressive regime. It was given the name "Revolution of the Carnations" as soldiers put these flowers in their guns to symbolise the absence of violence for changing the regime. Freedom day is one of the major holidays in Portugal

This celebration takes place on the 15th August every year and is also known as "The Feast of Assumption".

15th August

5th October

The festival of All Saints, also sometimes known as "All Hallows," or "Hallowmas," is a feast celebrated in the honour of all the faithful Saints and martyrs known and unknown on 1st November..

1st November

Independence Day celebrates the regaining of independence from Spain in 1640, and João IV of Portugal subsequently being crowned King.

1st December

The Immaculate Conception is a religious feast celebrating the Virgin Mary. The Immaculate Conception itself is a doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. It states that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was free from original sin.

8th December

Christmas day is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in the Christian calendar. In Portugal 'Pai Natal' visits late on Christmas eve and the children meet him very briefly and receive their gifts before he heads off elsewhere to distribute gifts to other children. Families celebrate on Christmas eve with a family meal and again on Christmas Day with each other for another feast.

Christmas Day

New Year's Day is the first day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar. Although the day is a public holiday the main celebration takes place at midnight on the night between 31st December and 1st January (New Year's Eve or Hogmanay). Many westerners make 'New Year Resolutions' on the 1st January which they hope to fulfil in the coming year, i.e., to stop smoking or lose weight.
