There are numerous banks and most have english-speaking assistants. Millennium BCP, Banco Santander, Credito Agricole etc. You will need at least your passport, a utility bill for proof of address (UK or Portuguese) and fiscal number to apply for an account and must do so in person. BUS SERVICE |
Caldas Bus Station is opposite the main Post Office (Os Correios) and next to PT Communicacões shop. From there you can pay around €6.50 for a single to go to Lisbon and afterwards a taxi ride to the airport around another €6.50. |

VODAFONE VITAMINA SIM CARD costs €10 Make sure your UK phone is 'unlocked' before you arrive in Portugal. This is a good saver for house hunters - at least you can keep an eye on the costs with pay as you go. I can also save you costs of receiving calls from abroad never mind making cheaper calls while you are in Portugal! TMN and Optimus are some of the other providers. You have to buy your credit in the shop until you have a portuguese Multibanco card then you can buy credit at any ATM. |

How to pay a bill at a MULTIBANCO machine. Not easy the first time! You need to move fast or you get timed-out. So here goes....
- Type in personal PIN number
- Select: Payment of Purchases & Services (Pagamento das Compras e Serviços)
- Type in the company's five digit reference number (Entidade) in the MB box on the back of the bill.
- Type in the customer reference number (Referência)
- Type in the amount (Montante)
- Press the Confirmation (Confirmar) button
Most banks have online banking so you can make payments from the comfort of home thus avoiding the glare of the people in the queues! |

PHONES

You have no choice but to use Portugal Telecom for your telephone installation but they don't need to be your provider so always do your homework before you sign the final supply contract. Check the Portugal News for other providers. For installation go to PT shop (opposite Os Correios in Caldas) with your passport and proof of address and bank details or check www.ptcom.pt.
They have an english speaking helpline also at 16200 then select 9.
For ADSL and phone connection (often on promotion together with free installation*) apply online at www.sapo.pt. Be sure to request the ADSL service you want the same day they install or you could end up with prepago which is not the same as 24 hour online broadband. Again press 9 to get through to the english speaking helpline and the'll explain the difference.
KANGURU are another internet broadband provider.

VIA VERDE |
You should not use the green Via Verve lanes on the motorway if you don't have the box in your car to register payment. To obtain one of these you need to have an international Multibanco card and your bank can arrange the payments / subscription to Via Verde.
Otherwise using the lanes will incur a fine even in a hire car. |
