Having lived in Foz Do Arelho for some time we recognize that everything functions differently to the UK. With our insights we are able to help smooth the process for sellers and buyers alike. We are now living in the seaside resort of Foz Do Arelho near Obidos LAGOON which is an hour north of LISBON international airport and 2 hours south of PORTO airport. This (until recently) undiscovered investment-area is on the atlantic westcoast of Foz Do Arelho known as the silvercoast (just imagine west coast Scottish/ Irish beaches but with lots more sun!).
Thanks to recent TV programmes and now Channel 4's interest in central Foz Do Arelho it is becoming well known as a great place to invest. With property prices about 10 years behind the Costa Del Sol or the Algarve and tax laws very similar to the UK it's smart to INVEST IN LOCAL PROPERTY.
The world wide property boom reached Portugal a number of years ago with vast areas of coastal land in the Algarve being developed for prime real estate, golf courses and luxury housing complexes.
However lots of buyers have now been priced out of the Algarve and dislike the large sprawling 'housing estates' in some of the areas. Learning their mistakes from the Algarve, a lot of the development of the Costa De Prata has been tastefully controlled by the local Camara Municipals with much greater restrictions on size, style and height of a house- especially along the magnificent coastal landscape of the Atlantic ocean. If you are looking for that ultimate holiday villa set in a secluded garden with bougainvillea and hibiscus growing around your own private swimming pool you will no doubt find exactly what you are looking for in the Algarve, however for a fraction of the price you can buy an exact replica here in Portugal with views as breathtaking as the west coasts of Ireland or Scotland.
But what about the climate I hear you ask? Well it's thankfully not as searingly hot in central Portugal as the Algarve throughout the summer months, when people are forced to stay inside with their air-conditioning. It's much more comfortable here with an average of 25 - 30 near the coast and 30 - 35 inland. Right into the month of November it is often 20 degrees by lunchtime, tho' it can admittedly rain here more than the Algarve, especially in February. However a frequently sunny 15-18 degrees between December and February still allows for most sports activities and relaxing in terrace cafes for those seeking the winter sunshine, and by March the temperatures start to climb again. Bodyboarding and surfing on Christmas day are firm favourites and not just for the foolhardy!
